The Academy Unveils New Inclusion Standards and Will Feature 10 Best Picture Oscar Nominees

June 30, 2020

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) are implementing some new changes for the Oscars. On Friday, they unveiled plans for their latest equity and inclusion initiative called "Academy Aperture 2025."

“We are excited to announce the next phase of our equity and inclusion initiative. In our efforts to increase representation, we are working to create new industry standards, add new voices to our Board of Governors and expand the Best Picture category,” the Academy wrote on Twitter.

In the initiative, posted on the film Academy’s website, the Oscars will allow a set number of 10 Best Picture nominations rather than the current allowance of five to 10. The changes will go into effect for the 94th Academy Awards in 2022.

A quarterly viewing process will also be implemented to make films easier to view year round by voting members in hopes of "leveling the playing field."

The Academy will also encourage “equitable hiring practices and representation on and off screen in order to better reflect the diversity of the film community,” by teaming up with the Producers Guild of America (PGA) and creating a task force spearheaded by David Rubin. There will also be panels that include conversations about race and ethnicity. In addition, there will also be new limits on governor term limits.

“Equity and inclusion into the fabric of every Academy initiative, committee, program and event," Rubin said.

“While the Academy has made strides, we know there is much more work to be done in order to ensure equitable opportunities across the board,” wrote Academy CEO Dawn Hudson. “The need to address this issue is urgent. To that end, we will amend—and continue to examine—our rules and procedures to ensure that all voices are heard and celebrated.”

The 93rd Oscars will take place on February 28, 2021. There’s a chance they may be delayed due to the pandemic, but no plans have been released at this point in time.
